Women’s Handbags – That Flatter Your Body Shape
Women’s Handbags – That Flatter Your Body Shape and Size.Look at the shape.Choose the shape that is opposite your body type. For instance, if you are tall and thin, look for bags that are more on the rounded side like the hobo or those that are a bit unstructured.
This will complement your figure as it would provide a sharp contrast to your body. If on the other hand, you are on the short and heavy side, it is good to carry women handbags that are tall, rectangular or those with really defined shapes.
Long and sleek designs will help counterbalance your more rounded figure. Of course, there is no need to buy women handbags that are absolutely reed thin or those with really sharp edges. Silhouettes in soft fabrics and leathers can do the trick. Just remember to stay away from women handbags with rounded designs.
Bring your best self forward by following the tips above to choose the best handbags for different body types. Knowing how to wear your handbags based on your body shape and fashion style will definitely help to enhance your image as a fashion-forward diva.
Women’s Handbags – That Flatter Your Body Shape and Size.Yep, there’s definitely a science behind these things, even when it comes to choosing the right bags! So, without further ado, here’s our definitive guide to choosing the most appropriate handbag styles that would most certainly flatter your figure, no matter what body type you may have. Oh, and if you’re wondering whether you fit into these 5 body types, yep, you will, because there are petite and plus-size versions of all of these!
I know that there’s a common misconception that bigger or plus-sized women are usually “Apple- or “Pear”- shaped and this is grossly incorrect because there are also petite women who have both these body types! Remember, don’t let society or the media try to tell you what your body type should or shouldn’t be, because beauty comes in all sizes, colours, ethnicities, and races, so you do you! 😉
Plus-sized women command attention. When you select handbags they must do the same. Bright colors and innovative re imaginations of classical shapes that accessorize your frame are a good choice for your body type. Select handbags that aren’t afraid to take up space, literally, or more figuratively—as was the case with this adorable tiny bag Lizzo brought to the American Music Awards and make a BIG statement.
The general rule here is the rounder you are, the more framed the bag ought to be. Now, this doesn’t mean carrying a hard box for counterbalancing your womanish shape. Square or rectangular handbags designed using soft fabrics are perfect in that sense. So you can be curvy and petite and look great flaunting a big rectangular clutch type handbag as well.
If you’re a plus-sized woman, finding stylish pieces that hug the gorgeous shape of your body is a must. The fashion industry has lagged, in a major way, when it comes to putting out high couture looks in plus sized sizes. Luckily, handbags have never had that problem!
Bag styles for all body shapes and sizes
When thinking about what style of bag to choose, the easy way to figure out what is more flattering for your body, is to look at your body shape (not sure – take my free body shape calculator quiz here) and think about where you don’t want to add additional width, and look for a bag that sits at a different height to that). For example:
More commonly referred to as the athletic body shape, the shoulders, waist, and hips are all of the same width. As this body type is generally seen as “straight”, the most common style tip for the rectangle body shape is to use bags that create the illusion of curves. Avoid structured bags and go for bags that fall on around your waist, your hips, or are tucked under your shoulders. Satchels, clutches, and hobo bags are great choices for this body type.
Just like an inverted triangle, this body type is characterised by shoulders which are broader in comparison to waist and hips. Since your bottom half is generally narrower than your shoulders, the aim is to draw attention away from your broad shoulders, and direct the attention instead, to the lower half of your body, to balance everything out.Bags you should go for: long straps so that your bags rest on or against the hips. So, whether you prefer satchels, shoulder bags, or cross body bags, they’d work as long as they come with long straps.
Women’s Handbags – That Flatter Your Body Shape and Size.Belt bags work too, but make sure they’re only worn on the hips or waist, instead of across the body as this would accentuate the top half of your body, which isn’t what you want! Prada’s Cahier Belt Bag would be an attention-grabber thanks to the ornate buckle, while Valentino’s V-Logo bag and Saint Laurent’s Kaia bag show us that cross body bags can come in different shapes and sizes and still be figure-flattering!Avoid: bags with short straps, clutches
The modern woman takes everything into consideration when picking how to choose a bag for her body type: her plans for the day, her clothes and, of course—her best features! This list just skims the surface when it comes to body types—people come in all sorts of beautiful sizes and proportions and, I promise, there is a perfect bag out there for every last one of us. You can learn more about the history of tote bags in our latest blog post. Who knows? It may even become your next favorite bag style.
This is a good overview! Being petite I have to be careful with large bags – if they are too structured they can make me look really tiny, haha! But I still do have some very large bags in my collection – I am so a handbag person more than a shoe person and have so many different bags. I find shoulder bags harder to wear with the kids, as it’s too easy for a shoulder bag to slip off or swing round and hit a poor unsuspecting toddler sometimes, ha! So crossbodies are my main go-to lately 🙂
Look at your favourite bag to date and notice its dimensions and features – outer pockets, inner pockets all those kinds of things can matter. I personally prefer a bag that has a zip up pocket on each side of the lining, but no additional dividers inside the bag (but I know others differ from this).
Bags that flatter all body shapes and sizes
Most commonly known as an athletic body type, the Rectangle is typically characterised by shoulders, waist, and hips that are all of the same width. Because your silhouette is generally “straight”, what you need to do, is create the illusion of curves.
Bags you should go for: clutches that are tucked under your arm, or slouchy hobo bags worn on the shoulder that create dimension and curves, such as the Jodie or Pouch by Bottega Veneta, and the iconic Fendi Baguette.Avoid: bags that rest on the hips, or those that fall below the hips as these tend to accentuate your “boxy” frame.
If your shoulders and hips are about the same size, and you have a defined waist, you have a curvy, or hourglass, figure. You shine best when rocking highly structured, architectural bags. Steer clear of slumpy formless bags!
The hobo bag might look great on twig thin women, but it isn’t as complimentary on a woman with ample curves. Iconic celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Rhianna have paved the way for fashion excellence. Kim Kardashian even once wore a $35,000 Dior cross body bag just to run errands.
You may have been faced with the situation where you really love a particular bag so much that you’re determined to score yourself one, but after trying it on, you realise that it doesn’t look as nice on.
But then, you see someone with that very same bag and wonder, “but why does it look so good on her?!” Baffling, isn’t it? Well, truth of the matter is, it probably boils down to your body type.
We probably never think enough about this, but it also applies to bags too, and not just clothes! Also, what if I told you that choosing the right bags could make it seem as if you’ve shed some pounds or kilos? Because, like everything else when it comes to fashion and style, it’s all about the play on proportions and bags certainly can help to flatter your figure simply by using them to either accentuate or take attention away from certain bodily characteristics.
Hozen’s Limón circle belt bag is a perfect choice for women trying to flaunt their waistlines. In eye catching shades of citron, rouge, onyx and attention commanding gold and silver—this bag’s flattering shape can easily be tailored to your personal style. What’s with these fruit metaphors? The apple shaped woman has a larger bust and waist with round shoulders and a less defined waist. Your body will appreciate soft textures, a spring color palette and accessories that draw attention upwards–to your face and chest.
Don’t wear anything draped, ruffled, pleated or things that are too pronounced and materials that are too shiny. The additional volume will not look great. Use flatter cuts on the hips as much as possible, because contrary to what one might think, the more your body is sculpted, it appears thinner.
